The annual HP Handheld Conference took place on October 7 and 8, 2023 in Orlando.  Unfortunately, I couldn't make it because I was recovering from surgery.


The conference had a record high number of presentations by calculator enthusiasts, Hewlett Packers, distributors and partners Royal and Moravia.

Disclaimer:  I do not work for Texas Instruments nor do I know when (or if) TI is working on and publishing operating version 5.9, 6.0, etc.  This is my opinion only (the opinion of a math and calculator enthusiast).


This focuses on the United States version of the TI-84 Plus CE series.


I would like to see the following in the next update:


1.  Simplification of radicals and square roots.*   Currently the series only has decimal approximations.


Examples:

√440 returns  2 * √110

√75 + √125 returns 5 √5 + 5 √3


2.  Mathematical operations returning exact results in terms of π.*  Like #1, the series only has decimal approximations.


Examples:

In radians mode,  cos^-1 (1/2) returns π/3

2 π - 3/8 * π  returns 13/8 * π


3.  Base mode and conversions.  With the exception of the classic TI-85 and TI-86, the TI-80s do not have a base mode nor base conversions.  I would like to see that added, make room under the test menu.    


4.  More colors than 15 please.   Maybe an RGB (red-green-blue) function in the TI-BASIC programming language?

HP 82204B Printer


Another tick box checked.   I purchased an HP 82240B Infrared Printer, which allow printouts from a lot of legendary HP calculators including (not an-all inclusive list) the 42S, 17B family, 32S family, 27S, 48 family, and the Swiss Micros DM41X and DM42.


The printer works on 4 AA batteries, I still have to buy an appropriate AC adapter for it.   


The printer works beautifully.   Check out the HP 82240B and some printouts using the HP 17BII+.

Python on Calculators: Python Files used as Modules

Python on Calculators:  Python Files used as Modules

(and Programming Tutorials by Mike Dane)


Python Files Can Be Transferred Between Calculators


Python scripts that are calculators have the .py extension, allowing the files to be transferred to and from calculators and python computer applications.   The calculators that I have with Python are:


* Casio fx-9750GIII

* Casio fx-CG 50

* Numworks

* TI-NSpire CX II


To my knowledge, other calculators with a Python module are:


* TI-83 Premium CE Edition Python (primarily sold in France)

* Casio fx-9860GIII (the fx-9750GIII model sold outside of the United States)


Importing Python Files - Extended Functions (extf.py)


For a Python file to imported in a python script, the source python file must be included in the calculator.   


Example: 


I would be working on the file usethesource.py and I want to import the functions defined on the source.py to be used.  All is needed is an import statement:

To use any of the functions from the source.py, use the source-dot prefix, like:


source.function()


Remember to type the name of the module, the decimal point, and the function.  The Casio calculators do not store custom functions in a catalog, while the NSpire CX and Numworks do include the custom functions in the variable list but not the module prefix.


The python scripts extf.py and extfdemo.py serves as an illustration:

New Videos: TI-65 Timer, TI-55 III Intro and Programming Demo

TI-65 Timer Demo 

A short demonstration of the timer feature on the Texas Instruments TI-65 calculator (from 1986).  Timer functions are rare on calculators.  (The only other non-graphing calculator I can think of that had a timer was the Hewlett Packard HP-45, and it was a hidden feature).

This is part two of the RPN Mode for HP Prime tutorial.  This time I am taking about advanced functions, such as numeric integrals, numeric derivatives, summation, and solving equations.

Syntax - RPN Mode:

Path:  Toolbox, Math, 2, 1 for MAX (2 for MIN)

Syntax:
1:  list or vector

MAX(n) or MIN(n)   (n is 9 or less)

1.  Enter the integer to be factorized, press the Enter key.
2.  Press Toolbox, CAS, 5, 2, 1 to execute CAS.ifactor(1)

Put the matrix on the stack.  Use the Template Key, choose matrix (1st row, 6th column).

Determinant:  Press Toolbox, Math, 7, 2.  Determinant is calculated automatically. 
Inverse:  Press Shift, then the division key. (x^-1).  This works for square matrices only.
Eigenvalues:  Press Toolbox, Math, 7, 6, 1.  CAS.EIGENVAL is called.  Execute CAS.EIGENVAL(1).

HP Prime: Ways to use the INPUT command (Version 6030)

Note: This is for HP Prime Software Version 6030 (2014 3 31)


The INPUT Command

On the HP Prime, the INPUT command can include various types of input forms: numeric fields, choose boxes, and check boxes. You can also restrict which types of input are accepted. This blog entry will cover some of the basic forms of INPUT.

Basic Form

INPUT(var, title, label);

var = can be one or a list
title = optional string
label = optional string, number of labels are equal to number of var

The example programs presented (except for IN4) win use one variable.

Here is an example of the basic format. Keep in mind, the title and label strings are optional.

Specifying Types

INPUT( {var, [types allowed]}, title, label);

Type numbers are surrounded in square brackets.

Common Types:

4 matrices
6 lists
8 functions
9 numbers with units
14.? CAS objects

IN2 and IN3 are programs that ask for a specific type. IN2 asks for a matrix (type 4) and IN3 asks for a list (type 6).

n groups the current and next n-1 checkboxes. If you want a checkbox next to each variable, let n = 1. A variable that is checked has a value of 1. Otherwise, the value is 0. Each variable and it's corresponding n are surrounded in curly brackets.

If you want to use more than one input form, I advise to keep INPUT types separate.

This INPUT form will create a choose box (drop down list).

HP Prime: BLIT (Video!)

Hey everyone!  Here is the a video on the BLIT (and BLIT_P) command for the HP Prime:

BLIT is basically a copy and paste command, copying one segment of a graphics screen or object, and pasting it on another segment.

Simplified Syntax (using the same graphics object and having no color filtering):
Coordinate Version:
BLIT(tx1, ty1, tx2, ty2, sx1, sy1, sx2, sy2)

Pixel Version:
BLIT_P(tx1, ty1, tx2, ty2, sx1, sy1, sx2, sy2)

tx1, ty1, tx2, ty2:  Corners of targeted segment (Paste)
sx1, sy1, sx1, sy2:  Corners of source segment (Copy)
